NEW PLYMOUTH YACHT CLUB FACILITIES The New
Plymouth Yacht Club is located at Ngamotu Beach in Port Taranaki, 2km from the
city centre in New Plymouth.
The club was established in 1939 and has 300 members. The
sand beach immediately in front of the club rooms provides a wide open area for
safely launching and retrieving boats. The clubrooms
will accommodate 250 people for functions and has a large lounge/bar and
separate kitchen as well as excellent changing rooms and showers. The facilities
have been recently renovated.
The diverse local economy includes agriculture with a strong dairying emphasis as well as aquaculture, flora culture, horticulture and forestry. Also very important are petrochemicals and energy, heavy engineering, manufacturing, education, leisure and recreation. Tourism has had an increasingly international profile because of the impressive range of natural attractions close by. The energy sector is particularly important and the New Plymouth District provides the base for New Zealand's major oil, gas and petrochemical industries, which in turn provides a solid commercial and employment base for the region. Overseas investment has been encouraged and has created a flourishing energy industry and associated businesses. RACE AREA The race area will be outside the harbour of Port Taranaki and in the Tasman Sea. There are no physical constraints on the course; the water is recognized as having little tidal effect and at less than 2 nautical miles from the club, easy accessibility. There is a permanent weather station operated by the Port Authority, situated just outside the harbour entrance. The weather station is accessible by VHF radio from the club. The sailing in New Plymouth is exceptional for all yacht racing. In summer the weather is typically settled, producing light variable breezes in the morning and steady sea breezes in the afternoon. The seas are usually slight with a typical 0 to 1 metre swell but as the race area is in the Tasman Sea some extremes of weather can be experienced.
